In 2000, while pursuing her interests in primate tracking in the rainforests of South America, our founder Dyan was introduced to the YeKwana tribe in the Caura River region of Venezuela.
During her short stay in their village, Dyan had the opportunity to meet two of the local nurses, Denis and Aurora Caura. Having a common profession, she exchanged patient case studies with them, and it soon became clear that the nurses were lacking in necessary resources to effectively carry out their work. It was out of this need that HealthShare International was conceptualized.
A group of health care providers and other professionals from various backgrounds collaborated to create an organization dedicated to the equitable development of indigenous groups.
Our volunteers have included representatives from the United States, Asia, Latin America, the Caribbean and Europe. Our initial project involved assessment of the needs of the community, and the distribution of approved medical equipment and text books. One such book, Donde No Hay Doctor (Where There Is No Doctor) has been an invaluable resource for the 21 participating YeKwana and Sanema nurses of the Caura River region of Venezuela.
Since this initial project, we have implemented health workshop programs, provided educational scholarships and collaborated with other non profit organizations whose focus is environmental conservation and sustainable economic development.
